How to Write an Address in Canada: Format, Postcodes and Examples

Addresses in Canada follow their own order and postcode rules. This guide shows how to write one correctly, with real postcode examples and the most common mistakes, whether you are sending mail, building a checkout form or preparing test data.

Address format

Street line, then city, two-letter province code and postal code on one line, with two spaces before the postal code.

Harry Jones 24 River Road Bedford NS B4A 0V1

Canada postcode format

Format: A9A 9A9

Canadian postal codes alternate letters and digits. The first three characters, the forward sortation area (FSA), identify a region or part of a city; the last three, the local delivery unit (LDU), identify a street block or building.

Sending to Canada from abroad

Write the address exactly as it is used locally, then add the country name in capital English letters on the last line.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Use the two-letter province code, such as ON, QC or BC.
  • Suite or unit numbers go before the civic number with a hyphen, like 1203-45 King Street.
  • In Quebec, French street formats are common: 123, rue Principale.
  • The letters D, F, I, O, Q and U are never used in postal codes.

Provinces of Canada

Canada has 13 provinces in our data. The province is rarely required in a postal address, but forms and databases often store it separately.

Test data for Canada

Phone numbers use the fictional 555-0100 to 555-0199 range with a real provincial area code. Generated addresses use real towns and postcode areas with invented streets and names, so they are safe for form testing, mockups and documentation.

Generate realistic Canada addresses in the local format, then copy them or download CSV and JSON.
