How to Write an Address in Portugal: Format, Postcodes and Examples

Addresses in Portugal follow their own order and postcode rules. This guide shows how to write one correctly, with real postcode examples and the most common mistakes, whether you are sending mail, building a checkout form or preparing test data.

Portuguese postcodes have seven digits written as four digits, a hyphen and three digits. The last three narrow the code down to a street or part of a street.

Tips and common mistakes

• Always include the hyphen: 1100-148 Lisboa.
• Floors are written like 2º Esq. (second floor, left).
• Common street types are Rua, Avenida, Travessa and Largo.
• The locality after the postcode is the postal locality, which can differ from the parish.
